Ajax Availability Calendar v3 released

capture
In January 2008 I released for public downloading the first version of my Ajax Availability Calendar.

Over the first few months I continually developed it, fixing bugs and taking into account the suggestions and requests made by the many people who gave feedback on the forum. It finally settled down to a “version 2” state and, due to work commitments, I had to let it lie for a while.

When I initially started on the script the idea was that it was to simply be a calendar to show availability with an AJAX interface to be able to update the calendar date states simply by clicking on them (ie no need to reload the page each time you need to set the availability of the dates). I imagined that it would be implemented on websites by web developers like myself so this script would just become “part” of the integration.

Expanding Multiple Select List with Search Filter

A short while ago I wrote a elasticMultipleSelect class that allowed you to set a fixed width on a multiple select list via css to maintain the general design of the page and then, when the select list receives the focus, it expands out horizontally to the width of the widest (longest) option.

I did this initially to a clients specific requests however the final brief was rather more complicated. They also needed be able to search through the options as the user typed to filter out the non-matching options.

mooSelect – convert a select list into a sliding checkbox list

mooSelect
EDITED: [2009-11-12]
Well, I have taken the plunge…. I have finally my first mootools class 🙂
Despite all the tutorials claiming that it is easy, I must admit to have found it rather complicated.  I am the first to admit that I have problems with classes so this is not a reflection on mootools, rather on my limited abilities.

The final result is probably not very good as far as classes go but it works and I’m happy with it 🙂

New demo for dynamic form fields

A few days ago I wrote a post to demonstrate how I was adding form fields dynamically with the use of AJAX and Mootools.

I have now created a new demo that further demonstrates the flexibility of this system.

edit once tweeted

I tried to tweet this but… the Twitter server was down (again). Not even a a whale this time to look at 🙁

All I wanted to say was, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to edit a tweet once it has been tweeted!

Scanner problems with Officejet J4850 – resolved

Officejet J4850My old multifunction printer died on me a couple of weeks back so it was time to get a new one.
This time round I wanted to add a fax to my “want” list so I went for the HP Officejet J4850.
This is probably the smallest of the multifunctions available which was an important factor for my tiny office at home.

BBC radio on the mac via widgets

Phantomgorilla.com BBC radio widget

Phantomgorilla.com BBC radio widget

Since getting my mac, I am loving itunes.
I know that it was available for windows, but was always quite happy with windows player so never really looked at itunes.

However, one thing has been bugging me, not with itunes itself, but with the BBC’s lack of support for radio streaming via itunes.
Living outside the UK I have been listening to BBC radio over the internet for years. However I found it rather tedious having to open up the bbc web site everytime I wanted to boot up the radio and, worse still, having to repeat the process everytime the browser crashed (interestingly more often now with Firefox 3.5) so have tried endless “tricks” to get it streamed via itunes with no luck.

“A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away…” switching to Mac

Well, maybe not so long ago and well, to be honest not really that far way, but, back in the UK when I started at Cumbria College of Art and Design (now part of the University of Cumbria) in 1989 my first dabblings with computers was with a Macintosh.

I remember that the college had 4 of them to share between c.400 students.  An unthinkable ratio nowadays no doubt.  But back then few people used them (or even knew what they were for I suspect) and I had one of them pretty much all to myself.  As I was studying graphic design at the time, I spent endless hours learning and working with probably some of the earliest versions of Adobe Pagemaker, Freehand and Photoshop.  All in black & white of course and probably on some ridiculously small screen by modern terms.
Unbelievably I still have some of the work that I did on those macs all those years ago 🙂

Time to blog…

In recent months time has been short due to demanding projects, so blogging has been the last thing on my mind.  I have also discovered twitter so that has been the focus of my quick comments (when I feel that I have had anything to say)
Quite a few things have been going on here:

  • moved over to a mac from the old pc – something I have wanted to do for years and now can’t quite rememeber ehy I didn’t do it ages ago….
  • Gabinohome version 5 which I develop has been released with new functions, more ajax (where needed) and better google maps search.
  • Having done a lot of my own javascript and used many of the dhtmlgoodies scripts, I have moved over to use the mootools javascript library.  I still help out on the dhtmlgoodies forum when I get a chance.
  • Reveamped my own website though that is an ongoing proccess….
  • Other web development as ever and many ideas for more personal (web) projects.

But I now thinkk that it is time to get this blog back up and running, let’s see if this time round I can make it happen.

Oh yes, and I really must get a template for this blog 😉
